How to Create a Bait Farm in Terraria? (best way)

Creating a Bait Farm in Terraria is a popular way to secure a consistent supply of bait for fishing.

The most common and effective bait farm utilizes the Flower Boots to endlessly generate grass and the creatures that spawn from it.

Here is a general guide on how to create a simple bait farm using the Flower Boots:

bait farm

Get the Flower Boots

First, acquire the Flower Boots, which can be found in Jungle Shrines or Living Mahogany Trees in the Underground Jungle, or from Jungle Crates caught while fishing in the Jungle biome.

Choose a Farming Location

Select a flat area where you want to build your farm. It could be on the surface or underground.

Make sure it’s a comfortable spot where you can manage the incoming critters without being disturbed by enemies.

Create Grass Platforms

Build several long rows of platforms and cover them with Jungle grass seeds, or simply wait for the natural Jungle grass to grow.
Jungle grass increases the spawn rate of bait critters like Grubbies, Sluggies, and Buggies.

Equip the Flower Boots and Stand on Grass

Put on the Flower Boots and stand on the grass or platforms.
Walking on the grass with these boots will cause flowers to sprout, which are immediately destroyed as you continue to walk, causing bait critters to spawn.

Use Weapons to Disturb the Grass

You can either walk back and forth or stand still and use low-damage, rapid-fire weapons like the Minishark or Flamethrower to continuously destroy and regrow grass where your character stands.

Make sure to aim the weapon downward.

This method generates critters as long as you keep firing.

Collecting Bait

Equip an accessory like the Bezoar to prevent poison damage from Jungle enemies, and optionally, a Bug Net or Golden Bug Net to collect the spawned bait.

You can simply walk through the critters to catch them with the net.

Extra: Improvements and Automation

  • To automate the collection, set up a system of conveyor belts to bring the critters to a central point where you can easily catch them.
  • Create a small pool of water within the farm area to spawn water critters and increase bait variety.
  • Protect yourself from enemies by creating a small enclosed space or using Peace Candles and Sunflowers to reduce enemy spawn rates.
  • For a more advanced setup, you could include actuators on the platform blocks to toggle them on and off, which disturbs the grass and spawns the critters. You can control this with a timer to automate the process

Remember that the types of critters you’ll get will depend on the type of grass you’re farming on (Jungle, Forest, etc.) and the biome you’re in.
Adjust your farming approach according to the bait you need most.
